Silicon Valley Patent Lawyers Set Up A Dog Park In Eastern Texas To Keep Cases There

One of the big battles in the patent world, as you probably know, involves the convoluted ways in which companies try to file and keep patent lawsuits in the notoriously patent holder-friendly East Texas. A few years ago, the appeals court that hears patent cases reprimanded the East Texas courts and suggested they should be more willing to transfer cases to more reasonable locations.

This has resulted in some games being played by lawyers who want to keep cases in Texas. The popular one is to set up a totally empty office in some of the office buildings that seem to specialize in this kind of thing. That was a nice part of the recent This American Life episode about patents, where reporters Alex Blumberg and Laura Sydell literally went to one such famous building in Marshall, Texas, and knocked on doors to see if anyone actually occupied the offices of "patent troll" companies. Another strategy has been to sue random companies in East Texas along with the real targets. The small East Texas companies are usually dropped from the lawsuit later, but the patent trolls argue... read more

HTC loses US patent case against Apple...

The US International Trade Commission has said that Apple did not violate HTC’s mobile patents after HTC lodged a complaint against Apple last month.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the ITC issued its initial determination saying that Apple did not infringe HTC’s patents relating to technology for searching and dialling phone numbers and methods for managing power consumption.

HTC could still appeal the case, however.

"This is only one step of many in these legal proceedings," said HTC General Counsel Grace Lei in a statement.

"We are confident we have a strong case for the ITC appeals process and are fully prepared to protect our intellectual property."

This filing was its third complaint against Apple, as it has sued the company before in the UK and the US. This most recent complaint followed HTC’s purchase of technology patents from Google.

It’s the latest one of many legal disputes between mobile companies relating to smartphone patents. Samsung and Apple are conducting lawsuits around the world, both claiming that their mobile patents were... read more

Samsung-Apple war enters new phase...

While the debate surrounding the global patent war staged by Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc. is garnering wide attention, industry watchers say Samsung has a good chance of creating a turnaround even after its three defeats against the software giant.

“Apple currently looks to be in the lead, but it’s much more difficult to provide a forecast on how the situation will end up,” said Kim Seung-yul, team manager of the N-Screen team at Daum Communications.

He also said that the three nations ― the Netherlands, Germany and Australia ― where its courts handed the victory to Apple have traditionally favored the firm which has the patent.

“The reason a turnaround is possible is that it will take time to examine Samsung’s technology-related patents, while the patents or trade dress issues raised by Apple are easier to check,” Kim said.

Samsung Electronics vice chairman Choi Gee-sung also said the Samsung vs. Apple patent supremacy is a long-term battle in a meeting with reporters late Friday.

“We still respect (Apple) as our primary customer, but we can’t just ... read more

What Is Social Business?

A Social Business isn’t a company that just has a Facebook page and a Twitter account. Social Business means that every department, from HR to marketing to product development to customer service to sales, uses social media the way it uses any other tool and channel to do its job. It’s an organization that uses social networking tools fluently to communicate with people inside and outside the company. It’s a strategic approach to shaping a business culture, highly dependent upon executive leadership and corporate strategy, including business process design, risk management, leadership development, financial controls and use of business analytics. Becoming a Social Business can help an organization deepen customer relationships, generate new ideas faster, identify expertise and enable a more effective workforce.

Sandy Carter, Vice President of Social Business Evangelism of IBM explains Social Business. She has also written a book called;Get Bold: Using Social Media to Create a New Type of Social Business.
